Travel, Flying and Aircraft Insurance
PPL Mania review Traffords Insurance

Added: 11 September 2005

Back in June 2005, I had a trip to Florida to finish off my pilot licence. Up until then I had accumulated 60 hours of student flying in England with a couple of different flying schools (one in Redhill and the other in Fairoaks). I seemed to have built up these hours with the help of outside interferences, such as work and weather and women, all of which hindered my learning progress. At that particular moment in time I started to question my suitability on becoming a pilot so I decided to bite the bullet and sign up to a PPL completion course in the States. Prior to my journey to the States I filled out all the necessary forms and obtained a temporary visa from the US embassy. It was quite a lengthy process so I was relieved when I had it all finished.

When I arrived at Gatwick I had a horrible thought! I didn’t take out any travel insurance. Arghhhhh panic stations! I had access to the Internet in the South Terminal of Gatwick so I rang popular travel insurance companies. None of these insurance companies could provide me with the cover I needed. If it was a non flying holiday to the states then I would have had lots of insurance companies to choose from, but it wasn’t, it was a flying holiday. I needed an insurance specialist that could help me. Then it dawned on me that the flying school in Florida had emailed me the details of an insurance broker that deals in aircraft insurance. They were called Traffords Insurance.

I gave them a call, I didn’t really know how much it was going to cost but I was pleasantly surprised when I learnt the cost of the different insurance packages. I ended up taking out a one year policy that would allow me to fly aircraft on my holiday trips.

When I called them I tried to explain that I had left it ridiculously late in arranging cover but the guys voice on the end of the line put me at ease, “we get people like you all of the time ringing up from the airport” he said. He explained clearly what the policy covers. Within 10 minutes of so I found myself taking the insurance policy over the phone, simply by handing over my credit card details.

Based on my own personal experiences with Traffords Insurance, I can wholly recommend these guys as I found them very professional and helpful indeed. I am one of these people that like to ring around four of five places to get the best deal but with Traffords I was in a real rush to get insurance and I was comfortable paying the price they quoted. Put it this way, the cost was on par with standard travel insurance with a little extra cost for the flying side of things. I am sure there are lots of other insurance brokers similar to Traffords, but I can say that I am happy with what Traffords provided me with.

I have had a look at the Traffords website and I see it isn’t just travel insurance they offer. Other insurance policies comprise of aircraft insurance (they do ground cover only as well as in flight insurance) and loss of flying licence insurance. Some of the reassuring facts about Traffords Insurance are listed below:

Aircraft insurance is arranged with Lloyd's of London and/or UK DTI authorised insurers.

They have been arranging aircraft insurance for over thirty years, so they know what they are talking about.

They provide cover for aircraft, club insurance, hangar keepers and aviation related travel insurance (whether you are learning to fly or already have your licence).

For professionals, they can offer loss of licence insurance to protect your income.
